Travel Arrangements

Visa requirements

Visitors to Thailand must be in possession of a passport with a minimum validity of six months beyond the period of their intended stay in Thailand.

Participants who require a visa for Thailand will be notified directly by AIT Extension about procedures and requirements for obtaining a visa from the nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate.

Participants from the countries listed below can get visas on arrival at Bangkok International Airport at passport control.

Thailand requires participants from certain countries to bring a Yellow Fever Certificate issued by the Ministry of Health in their country. This must be presented to the Health Control Section at Bangkok International Airport before you go through passport control. AIT Extension will inform you in advance if you need to get this certificate.

Airport arrival procedures

Upon arrival at Bangkok International Airport, you will pass through passport control before collecting checked-in luggage at the baggage claim downstairs.

After going through customs, turn left and look for the ITQ-4/AIT sign carried by the AIT representative assigned to meet you.

Transport to AIT

You will be accompanied to AIT by the AIT representative in transport provided by AIT. If your flight is delayed or for any reason the AIT representative cannot be located, you should use the airport limousine service (THB 500, or about USD 12) provided in the airport, or take a regular taxi (THB 200-250, or USD 5-6). Your expenses for these will be reimbursed at AIT, so please remember to keep receipts.

AIT is 42 kms north of Bangkok, and 16 kms north of the airport on Phahol Yothin Road. Maps of the AIT vicinity and the campus can be found on the web at:

Airport departure tax

Airport departure tax at Bangkok International Airport is THB 500 (USD 12). You will bear this cost yourself.

Please remember to let your contact person at AIT know your flight details, including flight numbers, date and time of arrival/departure so that arrangements for airport transfers can be made.

Registration

Registration for ITQ4 Phase 4 will be on Sunday, 29 September 2002 in the lobby of the AIT Conference Center from 1700 - 1900 hrs. For registration purposes, you should bring with you two (2) 1" x 1" photographs.

Accommodation and Food

Rooms
AIT Conference Center bedrooms are airconditioned with en suite bathroom facilities. All rooms have cable TV, mini-bar, hot and cold running water, telephone and a writing desk. The electricity supply in Thailand is 220 volts.

Reservations
We have reserved single occupancy rooms in the new wing, unless you have specifically requested a room in the old wing.

When you arrive at the AIT Conference Center, please go to Reception to check in.

Accommodation is available to participants from Sunday 29 September through to Sunday 6 October 2002. Please advise us if you wish to check in before Sunday 29 September or stay after Sunday 6 October.

Dietary preferences and restrictions
If you have any dietary preferences or restrictions, please inform AIT contact persons when you register for the workshop.

AIT Facilities & Services

Dining facilities

On campus, you have a choice between the AIT Conference Center restaurant (which serves Thai and western food), the student cafeteria (Thai, Chinese, Muslim and some fast food), the Student Union snack bar (Muslim, vegetarian and fast food), and a restaurant serving Thai food at the AIT golf course (next to the Phaholyothin Highway).

The AIT Conference Center restaurant is open daily from 0700 to 2130 hrs. The student cafeteria is open from 0700 to 2000 hrs. A meal in the cafeteria costs around THB 30 (about USD 0.70).

The airconditioned Student Union snack bar is located in the Student Recreation Center (SRC) next to the cafeteria. It also serves beverages, fruits and pastries, and is open from 0700 hrs to 1300 hrs.

 


Medical services

AIT has a well-equipped medical clinic with a medical doctor and support staff. It is located in the south annex of the AIT Conference Center. Medical attention is given according to the following schedule:

For medical assistance at night, please ring the doorbell at the entrance of the clinic.

For free medical assistance during the ITQ-4 workshop, present your AIT ID card, which you will receive when you register. In the case of an emergency requiring hospitalization, an ambulance can be arranged by contacting the medical clinic.

Banking

The AIT sub-branch of Thai Farmers Bank is on the ground floor of the Administration Building. Opening hours are 0830 to 1530 hrs Monday to Friday. Exchange rates for other currencies to Thai Baht are available from the Thai Farmers Bank Foreign Exchange Counter.

Recreation

On-campus recreational facilities include a swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course, basketball courts, badminton courts, table tennis room, lawn tennis courts, squash courts, volleyball courts, football fields, cricket and hockey pitches, a running track and a piano room. For use of the golf-course and the piano room, contact the AIT Conference Center reception.

The swimming pool is open between 0600 and 1800 hrs when a trained lifeguard is on duty.

Golf can be played at the following times:

 
Weekdays (Mondays to Friday s) 1100 to 1800 hrs
Weekends and AIT holidays 0600 to 1600 hrs

At other times, the golf course is parkland open to all members of the AIT community for recreational activities such as walking and jogging. There is also a park located at the west end of the campus near Student Dormitories U, V, and W.

Movies are frequently shown by the Student Union in the AIT Conference Center Auditorium from 1930 hrs. Tickets are sold at the entrance for THB 35 (USD 0.80). For schedule information, check the bulletin board at the student cafeteria.

The Student Recreation Center (SRC) houses the Student Union offices, a small gym, a TV room, a newspaper reading room, and the Snack Bar.

 

Prayer and worship

For Muslim participants, a prayer room is a ten-minute walk from the AIT Conference Center in the Student Recreation Center.

There are two Christian congregations at AIT, namely, the AIT Catholic Community (AITCC) and the AIT Christian Fellowship (AITCF). The AITCC holds its Sunday mass in the SERD Building Room E206 at 0730 hrs The AITCF holds its Sunday Worship service in Room E220 (SERD Building) at 0930 hrs, and a prayer meeting in Room E206 (SERD Building) at 2000 hrs. Friday Bible Study is held in Room E220 (SERD Building) at 2000 hrs.

Training facilities

The AIT Conference Center seminar and training rooms are equipped with all audio-visual equipment necessary for the workshop, including flip charts, whiteboards, pin boards, overhead projectors, slide projectors, a TV set and video player. An LCD projector will be installed for the ITQ-4 Workshop.

Computer and Internet access

During ITQ-4 Phase 4, each peer learning group (PLG) will be provided with three computers with Internet access. Participants and resource persons can also connect their laptops to the network in the training room, and through dial-up access in their room.

Post and telecommunications services

There is a sub-post office in the AIT Administration Building behind the Thai Farmers Bank. Service hours are 0900 to 1600 hrs Monday through Friday. For incoming mail, the following address may be used:

Telephone and fax services are available in the Communication Center located in the Administration Building Lobby from 0730 to 2000 hrs Monday through Friday, and from 1000 to 1700 hrs Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Long distance or overseas telephone calls can be arranged through the AIT telephone operator at the Communication Center or through the AIT Conference Center (for a nominal service charge). International telephone cards are also available at the counter of the Communication Center. These can be used for international calls in the kiosks outside the Communication Center and near the AIT Conference Center Reception Counter.

Library

The AIT Library collection has more than 170,000 volumes and 800 current periodical subscriptions. It is growing at a rate of 5,000 volumes per year.

Materials found in the Library cover subject areas corresponding to disciplines taught in AIT's four Schools.

Library services include lending, reference, online information retrieval, referral, inter-library loans, photo-copying, microfilming, bibliography compilation and document delivery service.

Except for certain designated official holidays, the AIT Library is open from 0800 to 2200 hrs Mondays to Fridays, and 0900 to 2000 during weekends. The library opens until 0100 in the morning for one month before examinations.

All library services are available to faculty, students, AIT alumni, and staff of the Institute, as well as to non-AIT users. AIT Extension issues ID cards to all ITQ-4 workshop participants to enable them to use the library facilities for the duration of the workshop.

Security and emergencies

AIT security guards are on-duty 24 hours a day around the AIT campus. They are well trained, and the community is generally very safe from theft. The AIT Security telephone number is 6000.

Laundry services

Laundry service is available through the AIT Conference Center. Alternative services are offered on the ground floor of Dorm D (see the Campus Map) in front of the Housing Office, and is open from Monday through Saturday 1130 - 1630 hrs. Laundry charges are reasonable. The Laundry Office extension number is 5995.

Other Information

Local transportation

Air conditioned public bus No. 29 operates between AIT and Bangkok every day. The bus fare to Bangkok is THB 18 (USD 0.40) one way. The bus stop is 100 meters from the AIT front gate towards Phaholyothin Highway.

Metered taxis are available outside the AIT entrance gate. You can take either one with a meter or negotiate the price with the driver. Normally, it costs around THB 300 (USD 7) to go by taxi to Bangkok.

For recreational trips to places in Thailand included in the workshop schedule, transportation will be provided free by AIT Extension. However, you will have to pay for entrance fees yourselves.

If participants request us to do so, AIT Extension can arrange transportation for trips other than those scheduled for the ITQ-4 workshop. However, participants expenses for these trips will have to be covered by the participants.

Insurance

During the workshop, you are covered by Group Personal Accident Insurance. This covers medical treatment and hospitalization for car accidents only (inside and outside AIT) during the workshop. The AIT Clinic provides free medical assistance during the ITQ-4 workshop only for minor illnesses such as colds, fever, minor cuts.

You are responsible for your own medical coverage for major illnesses incurred during your stay in Thailand. You can enroll in AIT's medical insurance plan through AIT Extension. For further details, please contact Reynaldo Calabdan by email: rey@ait.ac.th.

Newspapers

English newspapers are available in the AIT Conference Center lobby, and in the reading room of the Student Recreation Center.

Climate

Thailand has a tropical climate with three seasons. Temperatures in the hot season (March to May) range from 760 F (240 C) to 950 F (350 C). Humidity is high. During the wet season (June to November), the minimum temperature is about 220C (720 F) and the maximum about 340 C (930 F). Relative humidity is 80% or higher. Short tropical downpours are common. During the cool season (December to February), the maximum day temperature in Bangkok is about 320 C (900 F).
