| Dr. Rashidah Shuib is the Coordinator of the Women's Health
Development Unit located in the School of Medical Sciences,
University Science Malaysia (USM). The Unit is the first of its
kind in a medical faculty in Malaysia and Dr. Shuib is
responsible for its establishment. The Unit focuses its work on
Research, Education and Curriculum Development, Training,
Advocacy, Dissemination and Information activities in women's
health and gender issues. Its vision is to be an Academic Centre
of Excellence in women's health and gender whilst establishing a
strong linkage with the community, particularly with the women
NGOs.
Dr. Shuib's activism in women's health and gender issues at the local, national and international levels has given her the opportunity of bringing back into the academia recent work in the area. She has served as a member of the International Women's Advisory Panel of the IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation) from 1995 to 1999. Currently she is also a member of the Gender Advsiory Panel (GAP) of the Department of Reproductive Health, WHO. Prior to joinng the Medical School, Dr. Shuib was the Deputy Director of the Educational Technology and Media Centre of the University Science Malaysia. She also had the experience of working as an Administrator (Public Relations) with the Urban Development Authority from 1976 to 1977. Her tertiary academic background begins with a BA (Hons, 2nd Upper) in Mass Communication from University Science Malaysia. Her MEd in Educational Communication and Technology is from the University of Hawaii, USA, funded by the Fulbright-Hays scholarship. She then pursued her Ph.D. from the Michigan State University under the University Science Malaysia Academic Staff Training Scheme (ASTS) majoring in Educational Systems Development with a focus in Instructional Development (ID) and Evaluation. Her expertise in ID was tapped for the development of self-directed teaching-learning materials of the Matriculation programme of the University and also for the development of modules for the Distance Education programme of the University. When she moved to the Medical School, Dr. Shuib joined the Department of Medical Education and was involved in the Schools' curricular matters, including helping to run various faculty development workshops for the academic members. This expertise has come in useful in her work now with the NGOs. Her current research has been in women's health with funding from international organisations as well as from the Malaysian government grants. Recently she was awarded the CICHE from the British Council for the advancement of the Unit. This will span three years. |
