Dr. Khalid SAMO

Dr. Khalid Samo is currently the Deputy Dean of Graduate Studies, University College of Sciences & Technology Malaysia (KUSTEM) in addition to being a member of the Institute of Oceanography and the Faculty of Science of Technology at KUSTEM. He started as a tutor in 1981 at KUSTEM (previously under the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia). He is a member of American Acoustical Society and an Associate Member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. From March 1999 until September 1999 Dr. Samo undertook his sabbatical leave at Cheju National University, South Korea. 

At KUSTEM he has contributed towards the development of the faculty and has involved directly as a resource person in the Multimedia in Education Workshop, held at KUSTEM. Dr Samo's research interest focuses on underwater acoustics and he has had some training in 1985 and 1989 in Ship Electronics and Instrumentation at Japan Radio Company, a major manufacturer of electronic instruments for ships. A computer user since the era of mainframe computers, Dr. Samo has been following the development in computer technology and operating system through DOS, Win 3.1, Win 95 and now Win 2000. He is knowledgeable on computer hardware and network.

He holds a B.Sc. degree in Fisheries Science from Plymouth Polytechnic Ghana and a MA degree in Ship Production Technology from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. His Ph.D. research focuses on underwater telemetry where he finally designed a telemetry system for use by divers. During his graduate research he gained sufficient experience in computer programming using BASIC and Assembly languages. His present research interest concerns fish stock assessment using hydro-acoustics and target strength of live fish. His interest in computers started when they became multimedia tools for education, research and infotainment.
