Mr. Santhosh MATHEW

Mr. Santhosh Mathew is the National Executive Director of the LEAD program in India. The Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) program, with more than 1000 fellows drawn from 40 participating countries, 13 national/ regional programs and an international secretariat in London, seeks to build and sustain through its training (associate) and support (fellow) programs, a network of leaders from Government, Industry, Media, Academia and NGO's who are committed to promote change toward patterns of development that are environmentally sustainable and socially equitable.

Between 1986 and 1994 he worked in the Indian State of Bihar as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. His many responsibilities during this period included the design and management of development programs, administration of law and order and coordination between all arms of government at the Sub District, District and State Government levels. 

From 1994 to 2000 he was Professor at India's National Academy of Administration, (LBS NAA, Mussoorie) during which period he conceived and implemented many national and international training programs for civil servants from India and abroad. He has also worked with INTAN Kuala Lumpur, CSC Singapore and the IDS at Sussex in organizing training programs in their campuses.

He holds a Masters degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and has written several articles on governance and development policy. His research interests include citizen empowerment through right to information, water, rural development, economic reforms and poverty reduction. He has in the past coordinated the work of India's Ministry for Rural Areas and Employment (MORAE) (now called Ministry for Rural Development) and UK's Department for International Development (DFID) when designing the DFID-MORAE collaboration project on rural development. 

His other advisory assignments include work for India's Ministry of Agriculture, The Indo-Canadian Environment Facility (ICEF), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Council for the advancement of people's action and rural technology CAPART and the World Bank.
