| Captain Derek Lye has been a lecturer and trainer in the
Singapore Maritime Academy, Singapore Polytechnic since 1983. He
started his seafaring career in the Merchant Marine as a Deck
Apprentice in 1965 and finally went ashore in 1981, after
obtaining his Class 1 (Master Mariner) Certificate of Competency
from the Ministry of Communications, Singapore.
Captain Lye served the Republic of Singapore Navy from 1969 to 1976 during which time he underwent two years of naval training with the Royal Canadian Navy in British Columbia, Canada. He commanded three vessels during his naval service. In the maritime industry ashore he worked in Marine Insurance Surveying, Sea Trials, and Offshore Supply Operations before joining the teaching profession. Presently, he lectures in Maritime Meteorology and Coastal Navigation. Captain Lye has been involved in the World Bank Institute's (WBI) International Workshop on "Improving Training Quality (ITQ) through Peer Learning and Distance Mentoring" since 1998, first as a participant and subsequently as a Coach. He also coached in WBI's 1st International Workshop on Applying Interactive Learning Technologies (ILT-1): Practical Tools for Improving Training Quality in 2000. |
