Dr. Soon-Fook FONG

Dr. Soon-Fook Fong is a lecturer at the School of Educational Studies, University Science Malaysia (USM) in Penang, Malaysia. Since 1997, he has been a lecturer in Multimedia Computer-Based Education and Biology Teaching Methods. Between 1978-997, he was teaching biology for pre-university students and also served as the senior science master from 1988-1997.

He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Education from USM. His M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the Center for Instructional Technology and Multimedia, USM is in Multimedia Computer-Based Education and ICT Instructional Designs and Development. The focus of his thesis was on the effects of animation and feedbacks in CAI on the learning of abstract dynamic concepts among students with different psychological profiles. His research interests include exploring new opportunities with latest ICT technology interventions and linking them to learner psychological styles and characteristics to enhance meaningful learning.

Since 1999, he had been involved in a project sponsored by Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corporation entitled "Intel teach to the future" where he was involved in readapting a module for the Malaysian Educational environment and as a Key Trainer he trained Master Trainers and in turn they will train 12,000 educators by 2003. As a member of the university's CAI committee, he had conducted various ICT in-house workshops for fellow lecturers and offshore workshops on "Pedagogy of e-learning" for lecturers from private institutions.

Between 1993-1999, he was a panel member in the development of a new biology curriculum for the Malaysian Smart Schools. Between 1990 and 1997, he was a key Personnel for Biology at the "O" and "Pre-University" levels, where he assists the State Education Department in organizing and conducting numerous courses for upgrading pedagogical strategies of teaching and learning for all biology teachers.

As a committee member for the Association for Science and Mathematics Education, Penang, he had conducted various ICT-related workshops. He was also a member of a State Committee set up to establish multimedia resource centers in all primary and secondary schools. Through various competitions in educational innovations, he secured for himself and the school many coveted awards such as National Champion for Computer Script Writing and other state awards. For his efforts, he had been recognized by the Malaysian Ministry of Education with an Excellent Service Award in 1993, Innovative Teacher Award in 1996 at the state and national levels and more recently by the School of Educational Studies, USM with the Innovative Staff Award for the year 2001.
