Migrating to a Content Management System: suggestion

Massimo Buonaiuto sent me this e-mail:

QUOTE

Dear Massimo and Luigi et al.,
I am sending you a document I prepared more than one year ago about a
possible migration of the content from IPGRI Web site to a CMS.

It was just a draft, and probably the migration would cost less in terms of
resources, but I think it could arise good points to discuss.

Of course, comments are very welcome in the meanwhile...

Regards,
Massimo B.

When I was at IWMI last September I met with their Web support team. In March 2003 they implemented a simple Web CMS system. This was an open source system and although it did not offer workflow support they decided to proceed with using it as it was a low cost option.

To migrate their 'old' Web site (approx. 2000 pages) into the CMS it took 2 Web 'technicians' two weeks. During this period they worked with a PA specialist/writer who helped reorganize the information and checked the quality of the reworked pages.

I appreciate that our Web site and IWMI's old one possibly have different technical 'requirements' but I thought this might be a useful comparison.
